Russia to election monitors: Stay home. We don’t need you!

The government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is gearing up for a presidential election early next month, is looking forward to an easy transition. Putin’s hand-picked candidate-successor, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, is currently scoring high in voter-opinion polls and is expected to win the nationwide contest on March 2 in a landslide. News watchers both inside Russia and abroad have also speculated that Putin could stay put in the Kremlin if, after stepping down as president, as he will be required to do, a new President Medvedev decides to name him prime minister of the government he will be charged with forming.
