Turkish law-makers: Let them wear headscarves!

In Turkey, heated debate about the wearing of the traditional, Muslim headscarf for women is back – or maybe it never really went away. In Ankara, after a first round of discussion of the issue, Turkey’s parliament has voted “to approve a constitutional amendment allowing female students to enter universities wearing Islamic headscarves.” This is a move “that many secular Turks view as an attempt to impose religion on their daily lives.” Nevertheless, the government of the conservative, ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, “has defended its plan as a reform needed to give [Turkish] citizens religious liberty and bring Turkey in line with European Union human-rights guidelines.”
A second and final round of voting on the proposed reform is expected to take place this coming Saturday. (Associated Press)
