The Israeli daily Ha’aretz,
reporting that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had pulled ground troops out of the Gaza Strip yesterday after “intensive fighting that [had] killed more than 100 people in recent days,” noted that Hamas, the Palestinian militant organization that has controlled that territory since last summer, had “seized the opportunity” of the Israeli military’s withdrawal “to declare ‘victory’” in the latest fighting that has rocked the region. Ha’aretz notes: “The pullback followed days of sequential fighting that drew an appeal from Washington to end [the] violence and rescue peace talks with the Palestinians. The withdrawal came after the IDF senior command on Sunday recommended keeping up intensive military pressure on Hamas. Anticipating the likelihood that such approval would be granted by [Israel's] political leadership, the army moved additional reinforcements to the area.”
