Congo Elections
In 2006, Congolese voted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s first-ever, free presidential election. The polls were marred by violence, despite the presence of the world’s largest multinational peacekeeping force who struggled to maintain basic order so that the election could take place. The DRC has been headed by a transitional government since 2003, after a peace agreement brought an end to a war in which it is estimated 3.8 million people died.
