Perhaps Britain’s Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, the Church of England’s most senior cleric, was right after all when he recently suggested that it was inevitable that the U.K. would accommodate certain aspects of the Islamic religious law known as “sharia.” The preacher’s comments instantly provoked controversy, as they implied that Britain’s secular, legal-judicial system would eventually have to make room for a side-by-side, imported religious system that some members of the country’s Muslim population appear to embrace. But how and why should such a system be folded into Britain’s existing system, Williams’ critics wanted to know. As the controversy surrounding his remarks unfolded, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown “quickly reaffirmed the primacy of British [secular] law.” (Le Monde)
