In Myanmar, millions suffer as military dictators say relief effort is finished

More than 43,000 people have died as a result of Cyclone Nargis, the storm that hit Myanmar two weeks ago (that’s the government’s official figure) and, although the evidence suggests a different story, the dictatorial, military junta that runs the country now claims, in the words of its prime minister, Thein Sein: “We have already finished our first phase of emergency relief. We are going onto the second phase, the rebuilding stage.” In the face of news images of countless suffering inhabitants of Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Delta, the region that was hardest hit by the cyclone, the PM’s remarks “astonished the world,” and international, aid-providing organizations were “appalled” by what he said, Britain’s Times reports.
