May 18, 2008 — BEICHUAN, China – Thousands of earthquake victims fled areas near the epicenter yesterday, fearful of floods from rivers blocked by landslides that followed last week’s powerful tremor.

The evacuation underscored the jitters in the disaster zone. A severe aftershock – the second in two days and measured at magnitude 6 – shook the area early for 45 seconds, had people running into the streets.

The Xinhua News Agency said a lake in Beichuan County “may burst its bank at any time.”
