May 20, 2008 — BONN, Germany – One in eight of the world’s bird species are at risk of extinction as climate change puts them under great pressure, a leading conservation group warned yesterday.

The 2008 “Red List for Birds” report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature said 1,226 species of birds were now threatened. Eight species were added this year. The report was published on the first day of a 12-day UN conference in Bonn about biodiversity.
