In Britain, the government of Prime Minister Gordon Brown (Labour Party) is preparing new legislation for Parliament to consider later this year; it would considerably extend the scope of the U.K.’s Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, which already gives “hundreds of government agencies access to communications data” pertaining to British citizens and other residents of the United Kingdom.
