On Wednesday of this week, as the Globe and Mail reported, “Lebanon’s feuding leaders…struck a deal that gives Hezbollah [, the Iran- and Syria-backed, political-militant Shiite organization,] and its opposition allies the power to veto major government decisions….” The agreement has brought to an end “an 18-month-long political crisis that has inflamed sectarian tensions and recently brought the country to the brink of civil war.” The Canadian daily quotes a political analyst who focuses on Hezbollah. He told the paper: “This deal is essentially what Hezbollah has been asking for for almost two years.” The commentator added that the accord, which was mediated by Qatar – participants in the negotiations met in the Persian Gulf emirate’s capital, Doha – can be seen as “a major, major blow to the U.S. agenda in Lebanon.”
