Even as same-sex couples joyously dashed to city halls around California yesterday to become legally married, exercising their new, court-supported right to do so, half a world away, a legion of angry men in dresses – correction: in robes – were gnashing their teeth and threatening to throw a collective hissy fit over the fact that, last month, at an Anglican church in London, two male members of the Anglican Communion, as the worldwide network of Anglican churches is known, had exchanged commitment vows in a religious, wedding-like ceremony.
