Veteran revolutionaries tell Colombian rebels: Fight less, negotiate more

It might seem like an unlikely comment coming from a most unlikely source, but in response to last week’s dramatic rescue and liberation by Colombia’s military of the well-known politician Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages who had been held captive for years by Marxist rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Cuba’s Fidel Castro has weighed in. In one of the leave-no-subject-unaddressed commentaries the now retired Castro has been writing regularly for Cuba’s state-controlled press, the former Cuban president and eternal revolutionary stated publicly that he believes the FARC, as the Colombian rebel group is known by its Spanish acronym, should let the remaining hundreds of hostages it reportedly has been holding in captivity all go free.
