Nazi Hunter on Trail of ‘Dr. Death’

Exciting news from Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff: The head of the Israeli branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center believes he’s pinpointed the location of Dr. Aribert Heim, known as “Dr. Death” and the “Butcher of Mauthausen.” Heim, who conducted gruesome, lethal experiments on concentration camp victims, would be 94 years old now. His children claim he died from cancer in 1993, but have produced no proof of his death that would be needed to claim Heim’s $1.6 million bank reserves.

More from the Associated Press on the latest update:

“[Zuroff] told a news conference that his mission to the southern reaches of the Americas led him to at least four people who claim to have seen Aribert Heim in the past 45 days.

‘We’re better off than before we came,’ Zuroff said. ‘That doesn’t guarantee Heim’s capture, but I’m hopeful.’

Zuroff launched the investigation last week in the southern Chilean fishing town of Puerto Montt, where Heim’s daughter lives, although she was reportedly overseas at the time.

Zuroff said during the past three years she has traveled several times to the Patagonian town of San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina, which he visited this week. The Nazi hunter believes Heim is hiding out somewhere between the two towns, separated by the Andes mountain range.”

In other Nazi news, Austria has opened a new evaluation into the fitness of suspected Croatian Nazi Milivoj Asner, who has been shielded from extradition by Austria claiming he’s not well enough to go back to Croatia to face the music. Yet last month, Asner was witnessed strolling around at a soccer tournament by British tabloid The Sun.

Meanwhile, Serbian officials are setting up a case against a man living in a Seattle retirement community, accused of being a Nazi guard in a unit responsible for killing more than 17,000 civilians.
