In preparation for the Olympic Games that will begin in Beijing on Friday, China’s communist government has ordered residents of the Chinese capital to refrain from spitting and not to ask questions of foreign visitors. It has shut down factories and limited automobile traffic in an effort to reduce air pollution. It has made it clear that it will not tolerate – from anybody, including foreign visitors – any expressions of criticism of China’s policies toward Tibet, or of its weapons sales to Sudan’s government (which has been linked to the genocide in the western-Sudanese region of Darfur), or of its human-rights record.
