For the Palestinians, the death of the people’s poet

Mahmoud Darwish, the writer and man of verse who died last weekend in Houston, at the age of 67, from complications following heart surgery, was that rare, expressive figure who managed to speak for and unite around his work all of the beleaguered Palestinians, and countless other admirers around the Arab world, too. Today, in Ramallah, in the Israeli-controlled West Bank, Darwish was laid to rest in what was widely recognized as the equivalent of a state funeral.
