The good news (and it is joyous): Many Japanese are cheering because their countryman, athlete Kosuke Kitajima, has honored the nation by winning gold medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke-swimming events at the Olympics in Beijing; that’s the same feat he pulled off at the Athens Games four years ago. Kitajima, who won the 100-meter event on Monday, said: “I trained extremely hard for these Olympics and kept my focus….I think it was my commitment, my passion, that allowed me to get this result.” (Yomiuri Shimbun; also Associated Press)
