What does the conflict between the armed forces of Russia and those of its southern neighbor, Georgia, which are trying to prevent the Georgian province of South Ossetia from breaking away, underscore about the nature and meaning of war-making today? That it’s brutal, destructive and unstoppably deadly? Check. That it gives bigger, militarily stronger powers opportunities to show off and, most crucially for their defense industries, to test out in the real world their latest guns and ammo? Check. That sitting down to talk over differences and negotiate settlements is less messy and usually less bloody than the old-fashioned, muy macho, shoot-’em-up style of resolving disputes? Definitely.
