It’s big news, no doubt, but is it the best news for Pakistan and for those fighting against terrorism?

First, the statement from Pervez himself:

“After consultations with my legal advisers and close political friends, for the country and the nation today, I am deciding to resign from my office. I am leaving with the satisfaction that whatever I did for this country and the population, I did with honesty and commitment.


“But I am also a human being. I might have made some mistakes, but I have hope that this nation and the population will tolerate those mistakes with the belief that my intentions were always clear and to the benefit of this country.”

So the opposition coalition — the Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-N — have succeeded in their unifying quest to oust Musharraf. But what now? Even with their common goal of ousting Musharraf, infighting nearly caused their coalition to fall apart. What about when it comes to the nitty gritty of running Pakistan, and fighting radical Islamist forces in the country — against which the coalition has only launched one, rather weak, extensively televised operation?
