Stocks have risen in value in Europe and Asia since yesterday’s announcement by U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson that the U.S. government plans to bail out the ailing mortgage giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. The assumption among investors is that Uncle Sam’s action “will shore up the mortgage market” in the United States. (Bloomberg)
