It was a sign of the Iraqi Government’s growing confidence coupled with the ongoing need for security in a country where roadside bombs are commonplace.
An Iraqi convoy to take the Deputy Prime Minister and a number of other senior officials from Baghdad to Falluja and on to Ramadi was a staggering 33 vehicles long, including army Humvees, police pick-up trucks and a pair of ambulances.
They powered along a once-hostile highway leading west from the capital in a formidable formation that went something like this:
