Yesterday, an air strike by the NATO-led International Security Force (ISAF) against Taliban militants in the Nad Ali district of Helmand, a province in southern Afghanistan, apparently ended up killing at least 17 civilians. In Helmand, the provincial police chief told Xinhua, China’s government-controlled news service, that the ISAF and the Afghan National Army had “launched a massive oppression against Taliban militants,” killing several of them. The civilian deaths were reported later in the day when “civilians from the bombarded village carried dead bodies in two vehicles to the provincial government compound in the capital city of Lashkar Gha.” (Xinhua) (Other news reports have stated that at least 18 civilians were killed.)
