Right now, at the Vatican, the headquarters of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, of which Pope Benedict XVI is the administrative and spiritual head, that institution’s procedure for considering a deceased person for sainthood is under way. The candidate for sainthood in question is the controversial, Italian-born, World War II-era pope, Pius XII, whose papacy lasted from March 1939 until his death in 1958.
