One of the leaders of the movement for rights of Iranian Azerbaijanis Abbas Lisani was released in Iran.
Thus, the fighter for the rights of Iranian Azerbaijanis Lisani was held in prison for 30 months. He was charged with organization of the march to the Babek fortress in 2006, meetings of Azerbaijanis and causing damage to the national security of Iran.
An estimated 28 million Azeris live in Iran, the Azeri nation spilt in two after the Russian-Persian wars with the treaty of Turkmenchay in 1828. North Azeris have a established state while Azeris within the Islamic state of Iran are persecuted and under pressure to adopt the Persian culture, while they are being deprived of their cultural rights by the Tehran regime.
