WELLINGTON, New Zealand – New Zealand’s prime minister has conceded defeat in elections held in the South Pacific nation.
Prime Minister Helen Clark told a crowd of supporters Saturday night after nearly all the votes were tallied that “tonight is not our night.”
She congratulated conservative National Party leader John Key for becoming New Zealand’s next prime minister. She says she will quit as leader of her Labour Party.
Key’s victory ends almost ten years of rule by Clark, one of the world’s longest reigns by an elected woman.
