Rice and India talk tough to Pakistan on terrorism – and Islamabad responds

There she was late last week in Islamabad, George W. Bush’s hapless envoy, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, fresh from a visit to India, where she had told the government of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the United States stands behind it in solidarity in the aftermath of the Mumbai terrorist attacks, which took place nearly two weeks ago. Later, in Islamabad, Rice met with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. There, she “is reported to have told” the Pakistani leaders “that there is ‘irrefutable evidence’ of involvement of elements in [their] country in the Mumbai attacks, and that [Pakistan] needs to act urgently and effectively to avert a strong international response. The information emerging after her departure indicates” that Rice told her Pakistani-government contacts that their “options were quite limited.” (Dawn, Pakistan)
