Shoe-Chucking: The New International Sport

Current World News Comments (0)

Last time, it was George W. Bush ducking the sneaker of an Iraqi journalist. Today, it was Chinese premier Wen Jiabao who was the target of some sole-searching. The shoe, pictured, was tossed at Wen as he gave a speech on the economy to Cambridge University students. More:

“‘Following an incident in the auditorium during the premier’s speech earlier today, a man has been charged with a public order offence,’ a police spokeswoman said on Monday.

‘The 27-year-old man has been charged with section four of the Public Order Act and will appear at Cambridge magistrates court on Tuesday, February 10.’

The protester, who was held by university security guards, shouted: ‘How can the university prostrate itself with this dictator?’

Demonstrations over China’s human-rights record and policy on Tibet have taken place throughout Wen’s visit.”

Security at events featuring world leaders already includes searching bags and walking through metal detectors. What’s next, being forced to enter in stocking feet?
