More than two decades after the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, Abdel baset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, 57, who has spent 10 years in prison for the attack, is launching an appeal against his conviction. More:
“Arguing that the case against him was flawed, Margaret Scott, al-Megrahi’s lawyer, said: ‘No jury, properly directed, could have convicted him beyond all reasonable doubt.’
The Libyan, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, did not make an appearance at the court in Edinburgh for the start of the trial.
Al-Megrahi, who has repeatedly protested his innocence, lost an appeal in 2002 and last year failed to secure his release on the grounds he was dying.”
Al-Megrahi, a former Libyan secret service agent, was originally sentenced to life in prison at a 2001 tribunal.
