Dog debate boils down to a simple question: What is `love’?

The great dog debate — it started with Your dog does not love you and other cold-nosed truth and continued at Moxie’s owner weighs in on dog-love column — seems, in many instances, to come down to a debate over what mean by “love.”

Oh, sure, there were more than a few commenters who seemed certain that their feelings for their dogs were reciprocated in all their subtlety and depth; that a dog’s experience of love is fundamentally identical to a person’s experience of love.
But most of those who disagreed with me in the comment threads seemed to have a more nuanced and realistic view that the word “love” properly applies to the deep attachment that dogs develop for their owners.
Passions run high on this issue, so to speak, so my hopes for a calm, thoughtful discussion about this age-old question aren’t super high.
