This just in from a State Department briefing:




Question: Can you confirm the release of Fathi al-Jami and that he is being medically treated in Jordan?

Answer: We welcome reports that Fathi El-Jahmi is in Jordan receiving medical care and believe this is a positive development.



El-Jahmi was arrested in 2002 for stating that Libya needed democracy, free speech and a constitution. He had been sentenced to five years in prison for this, was released, re-arrested in 2004, and in 2005 charged with trying to overthrow the government.



Amnesty International reported last month that El-Jahmi’s health was seriously in danger from his imprisonment. Many parties around the globe had called for his release.
