Castro Congratulates Chavez on his Talkfests

In this episode of Reflections from Fidel, the Cuban strongman pulls the opposite of a King Juan Carlos (refresher: “Por que no te callas?!?”) and congratulates Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on 10 years of his “Hello, President!” Sunday talk show, which has included scintillating bits such as Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega following Chavez around a state-run grocery while Chavez sticks an open bottle of vintage Venezuelan ketchup under Ortega’s nose. From Fidel:



“I have made a conservative calculation that in those ten years, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has dedicated 1,536 hours, the equivalent of 64 full days, to a program for informing and educating the nation.



In that unending exchange, he has been teaching and learning, educating and being educated by the people. He has read, acquired and transmitted knowledge. He has studied and recommended books, remembering the rich history of his country, the struggles and prophetic dreams of Bolivar, many of whose speeches he knew by heart.”



Not that the Venezuelan people have exactly enjoyed it: The program goes on for as long as Chavez wants to talk, and the king of the eight-hour annual address has been known to push “Alo, Presidente” past the five-hour mark.
