Golf guilt

Golf has always been a bit conspicuous when it comes to a leisure-time activity — it consumes huge hunks of time and great swaths of land, and is identified in many minds (including, I admit, sometimes my own) with excess and even indolence. In tough economic times, in particular, playing golf seems almost an insult to those who are truly struggling, even though green fees at the municipal courses I play average about $7 an hour, cheaper than bowling.
