Finnish millionaire’s daughter freed by kidnapper

10:50AM Sunday Jun 14, 2009

HELSINKI – Police say they have captured a kidnapper who won a large ransom by taking the daughter of a millionaire hostage.

Until the police announcement, the public had not been told that 26-year-old Minna Nurminen had been missing since May 27 and kidnapped.

Detective Chief Superintendent Kari Tolvanen says the family paid “a very large ransom” for her release, but declined to name the amount. Finnish Channel 4 said the ransom was almost euro10 million ($NZ22.33 million).

Tolvanen said Nurminen was found unhurt in a forest in southwestern Finland late on Friday. She belongs to the Herlin family which owns the international elevator company Kone.

Police say they arrested a Finnish man suspected of the kidnapping, but declined to give more details, including his identity and how and when he was captured.
