Duststorms that stay on your nose and eyelashes

Uck. The layer of dust lying over this particular corner of Diyala province is thicker than treacle and about as pleasant to inhale. This desert pea-souper has been squatting over this base like a toad for 36 hours and shows no sign of letting up. Last night, it was practically snowing dust. In the ten minutes it took me to walk from work-tent to bed-hut, my clothes and lungs were saturated. For your amusement I attach a picture of my face, complete with hair and eyelashes thickly covered in a layer of Iraq’s finest, most penetrating, genuine, custard-coloured dust.
