Soldiers seized the national palace and flew President Manuel Zelaya into exile yesterday, hours before a disputed constitutional referendum. Congress appointed a successor, but Zelaya, a leftist ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, said he was the victim of an illegal coup.
