Gov. Pat Quinn came close to hitting the mark with his first TV commercial of the primary campaign season three weeks ago.
“Hold on, Dan,” began the 30-second spot, which went on to knock down the central claim in the first ad aired by his challenger, Comptroller Dan Hynes, and conclude with a wag of the finger at Hynes for playing “the same old political games.”
The more-in-sorrow-than-anger tone of the spot made Hynes look churlish and, despite glossing over the fact that the legislature had already rejected Quinn’s tax plan, set Quinn off toward the high road in his bid to hold onto the job he inherited last winter when Gov. Rod Blagojevich was impeached and removed from office by the General Assembly.
But Quinn, the accidental guv, took a detour over the weekend, rolling out a new ad that misfires badly:
