Seven men charged in Mumbai attacks
Pakistan on Wednesday charged seven men in connection with last year’s Mumbai attacks, its first round of indictments in a case being monitored by India and the United States to see whether Islamabad makes good on promises to bring those responsible to justice.
Despite a crackdown in the months after the attacks, analysts say that Lashkar-i-Taiba, the Pakistan-based Islamist group blamed for the three-day assault that killed 165 people, remains active and largely untouched by Pakistani authorities.
The Mumbai attacks halted a slow-moving peace process between Pakistan and India aimed at resolving their core dispute over Kashmir, a region they both claim. India says Pakistan must crack down on militants before talks can resume.
The charges were announced in a court located inside a high-security prison in Rawalpindi, near the capital, Islamabad, on the eve of the first anniversary of the attacks.

U.N.: Rebel network spans 25 countries
One of Africa’s most brutal rebel movements relies on a vast network of supporters in at least 25 countries, including in the United States and Europe, according to a new U.N. report.
The findings, which show that supporters help rebels in Congo buy arms and transfer money, were slated to be discussed by the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday. They have been described as a scathing indictment of how little the international community has done to cut off logistical support to the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, an ethnic Hutu militia that has wreaked havoc in Congo.
