‘Avatar’ surpasses $300m at US box office

Avatar has dominated the US box office for a third consecutive week, taking in $68.3 million over the New Year’s holiday weekend.

The James Cameron sci-fi epic has pulled in $352 million domestically since its release 17 days ago.

Sherlock Holmes at number two, Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel at number three and It’s Complicated at number four all remain in their previous positions.

Sandra Bullock makes box office history with sports drama The Blind Side, which lands at number five this week, becoming the only actress ever to surpass the domestic $200 million mark with a film marketed with her name solely above the title.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Did You Hear About The Morgans? and musical Nine switch places at eight and nine respectively, while Clint Eastwood’s drama Invictus claims the number ten spot with $4.1 million.
