When the Consumer Electronics Show used to be in Chicago I’d usually find an excuse to wander over and check out tomorrow’s gadgets today. I have a distinct memory, in the early 1980s, of being at the Sony booth and putting on a headset for the device that became the Walkman. “This,” I thought confidently, stunned by the huge, high-fidelity stereo sound and how it marked such a quantum leap over transitor radios, “will change everything about how we think of portable audio.”
