The night before getting the call to go to Haiti I’d been to the pictures to see The Road, based on the Pulitzer-winning novel by Cormac McCarthy. In the two days it took me to get here I thought the film might have been some kind of mental preparation. I couldn’t have been more wrong. McCarthy’s post-nuclear apocalypse didn’t come close to preparing me. When Tim Reid and I went to the main hospital’s morgue the scene was incredibly disturbing. The morgue couldn’t handle even a fraction of the bodies being brought in so they were overflowing into the grounds of the hospital grounds.
