Does hooting at your heroes predate Powell?

Kevin Pang tweets: “Why are they booing Deuce McAllister and Drew Brees? Rude.”


We make this joke with ritual weariness in our house.  The punch line, such as it is, goes, “They’re not booing, they’re saying `Doooooooooooooooooose’”  as though you were a patronizing  announcer who assumes the audience is unfamiliar with the tradition.


“How long have fans been doing that?” Johanna asked tonight, after Ben had expressed the obligatory sense of mock bafflement that New Orleans Saints fans were booing their victorious stars.


I said that the first time I remember hearing it was in the 1960s with Baltimore Orioles slugger Boog Powell.  But that I’ll bet someone online can pre-date that.
