A Sunday lunchtime arrival at Eleftherios Venizelos airport in Athens, newly built for the 2004 Olympics and the drizzle and overcast sky seem appropriate for the story of economic gloom we’re here to follow. One of the so called PIGS, together with Portugal, Ireland and Spain, the country’s debt is huge, and could threaten the Euro currency as well as affect economies of countries asked to bail the PIGS out. I decide to take the underground Metro into the city, a 40 minute ride on an immaculate extension of line 3, again completed for the recent Olympics. The last time I saw underground stations this clean was in communist North Korea.
