so upset by this as was there 2 weeks ago and recognise many places that have been affected.this will be an enormous disaster for such a small island as they rely greatly on tourism[it has a world heritage site] and exports of bananas, flowers, wine etc all of which will be affected.many will lose work and income in a country that has very limited resources and does not have such a good social security system as us.most have to supplement income by growing food without machinery on small terraces which will be even harder work now.my thoughts are with all affected on this beautiful unique island and they deserve all the help possible.i also found the prior comparison with cockermouth to be ignorant and offensive, yes that was also tragic but not on this scale, and its not madeiras fault anyway .

My Father has a house in santo antonio on the island has been without heating or electricity now for days and the car has slid down a hill and is no where yet to be seen. My thoughts go out to all those on the island and to all my family and hope they stay safe .

My mum comes from this beautiful island and i still have loads of family there. We have spoken to relatives out there and all the locals are scared. It is such a shame.I have been there 17 times myself and never thought anything like this would ever happen there.
My thoughts are with the famlies of those who have perished.
