Riots flare between Muslims, Christians

Rioters armed with machetes slaughtered more than 200 people overnight Sunday as religious violence flared anew between Christians and Muslims in central Nigeria, witnesses said. Hundreds of people fled their homes, fearing reprisal attacks.

The bodies of the dead, including many women and children, lined dusty streets in three mostly Christian villages south of the regional capital of Jos, local journalists and a civil rights group said. They said at least 200 bodies had been counted by Sunday afternoon.

Car bomb explodes at government agency

An apparent suicide car bomb killed at least three people and heavily damaged a building housing a government investigative agency Monday in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore, police said.

Many more people were believed to have been wounded in what appeared to be the biggest explosion to strike the nuclear-armed, U.S.-allied country in several weeks.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion fell on the Pakistani Taliban and allied militant groups.

The blast occurred outside the Federal Investigation Agency building near the perimeter wall, police official Zulfikar Hameed said.
