Protest Fervor Reaches Vietnam

A week ago I wrote a column about hopes that the revolutionary fervor in the Middle East would spread to the Asian country of Burma, helping pick up where the Saffron Revolution left off in taking down the junta (but putting leader Aung San Suu Kyi in danger of being rearrested by the regime). Today we see rare footage out of the communist country of Vietnam — where fighting for democracy and free speech lands you in prison, as Father Nguyen Van Ly and other brave Vietnamese can attest. Al-Jazeera reports that about 100 farmers whose lands were seized by the government and others seeking basic rights held up signs in a silent protest on a street in Ho Chi Minh City. They were all taken into custody and at least one was seen being beaten by police.
