Saudi King Grants Women the Right to Vote, Run for Office

Over the years, Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has taken steps toward liberalization in the extremely conservative Salafi kingdom, particularly in the area of women’s rights. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, where women take co-ed classes, can drive on campus and don’t have to wear veils, opened in 2009 and reaped the ire of many clerics. Today, the king granted women – who have been using social media to highlight their rebellion against the prohibition on driving – the right to vote and run for office in municipal elections.
